Wedding photographers get a behind-the-scenes look at every wedding that most guests and vendors don't see. It's one of the reasons I love shooting the beginning part of the wedding day so much. Aside from all of the cute details I get to photograph, the anticipation is palatable and it can be photojournalism at its best. [ Read More ]

Every now and then there's a moment in my life that leaves me shaking my head over my own stupidity, but as the world continues to become a smaller place, here's a lesson in time zones that's worth sharing. I'm a big fan of Profoto. Yes, they're an SCU partner, but I've worked with a lot of their team for a whole bunch of years. I genuinely like the company, the people and the quality of their products. So, when they asked me to help spread the word on a live streaming event today, I jumped on the opportunity to help. I posted the link on Twitter and all over Facebook yesterday and then this morning, but there's a difference between CET and CST! CET was the time zone. As I shared the event, I only thought CST, thinking we were tuning into live-streaming half an hour ago. NOT! The live streaming event took place at 3:30 AM EST. Sorry for the confusion and sending so many of you to a live event that had passed. But here's the scoop in real time right now - The A1 is pretty remarkable and has the potential to change the way many of you shoot, having a lot more longevity than my ability to think through the time zones! LOL The trailer for the new Profoto A1 featuring good buddy Sal Cincotta is below. I also wanted to share the "First Look" video from Adorama TV featuring another great friend, Vanessa Joy. Check it out further with a click on the A1 above. Profoto never slows down in working to raise the bar on the quality of your skill set and the images you capture! The Panasonic LX100 is one of our favorite semi-pocketable compact cameras. This class of high end compacts offer great image quality and build quality, while also being incredibly compact and portable, making them great travel and family cameras for when the full DSLR/Mirrorless kit is just overkill. Award-winning Wedding Photographer Susan Stripling recently shared an open letter she wrote dealing with sexism in the photography industry. In the letter, she shares her experiences with male peers, wedding guests, employees at camera stores, and everyone in between who makes gender an issue in a field where sex shouldn't matter. This photo was captured from one of the trails leading out of the Loowit Overview just prior to reaching the Johnston Observatory in Mount St Helens National Volcanic Monument, says Matthews. While most people were composing shots of Mt. St. Helens, I noticed that the real light show was happening in the opposite direction. I particularly liked how the sky and the foreground wildflowers shared a similar color palette as Mother Nature was in perfect harmony. We have all seen those amazing shots of the night sky that show the milky way the type that make you stop and look and maybe say wow. You know ones like these: As photographers, these images are in the easy to shoot, difficult to master category. The basics are these.
Yup, that's about the basics. If you go outside tonight with your average DSLR and a wide angle lens and follow the above, you'll get something maybe not the shot of your life but something. You can make your own judgements about exposure based off your test shots. Now, this is one of those rabbit holes you can go a LONG way down. Setups, compositions, gear, post production there is a LOT to be learned if you are motivated enough. If it's for you, take a look atJosh Dunlop's Milky Way Mastery it's the pick of the bunch right now. If not, just get out and shoot and see what you can come up with. The Syrp Genie Mini is a neat little tool to add a little motion to your time-lapse project (or a smooth pan to your video projects). But in a new post from the folks at Syrp, it turns out it's pretty good for a home-brew 360-degree timel-apse rig, too. [ Read More ] |
